1.0 ICS 100 Overview
The Incident Command System (ICS) was developed in the United States and is a semi military administrative organizational structure. It’s primary purpose is to standardize an administrative organizational structure while dealing with a wide variety of disasters or planning requirements. Some examples where the ICS could be used are; forest fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, oil spills, conventions and weddings.
Standardizing the terminology and the command system allows for more efficient use of resources, and effective communication, because all personnel trained in the ICS, “speak” and understand the same phraseology and understand the protocol within the system. This is especially important in situations where there are different languages, cultural and multi-jurisdictional (Unified Command) circumstances.
